Silicone implants are among the most used medical devices, implanted in anatomic locations such as pectoralis, calf, gluteal, testicle and breast. However, they can cause a broad spectrum of chronic inflammatory-related diseases, including cancer. In the IS2M-BioInterface group, we have performed pioneering work to alert about these health issues. One of the challenges is to visualize and identify silicone accumulation inside cells and tissues. At IRIMAS-IMTIS, we develop tomographic diffractive microcopy, a label-free technique to image transparent samples. We propose combining our expertise to monitor by optical tomography the internalization of silicone nanoparticles in living cells and tissues, and later-on, to visualize silicone inside tissues originating from implanted patients.
